Quit notice: IYC blasts Nigeria security agencies over preferential treatment to Arewa youths

– Ijaw Youth council has berated Nigerian security over non-arrest of Arewa youths who gave notice to Igbos resident in the northern states

– The IYC says the action of the security agencies was wrong saying if youths in the south had made such statements, they would have landed in detention

– The group called on security agencies to live up to their billings in the discharge of their security assignments to Nigerians

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has berated the Nigerian security agencies over the preferential treatment given to Arewa youths in the handling of youth restiveness in the country.

President of the IYC, Eric Omare, in a statement mailed to ZENITHBLOG.com, said the Nigerian soldiers and police are treating with kids glove the threat issued by youths of the Northern extraction, noting that their silence smacks off irresponsibility of their part.

Omare said the Arewa youths quit notice to Igbos living in the north to vacate the zone by October 1, 2017 amounted to grave threat to national security and the indivisibility of the country.

He, however, said the relevant security agencies have deliberately kept a deaf ear to the security threat posed by the Arewa youths, describing the notice as treasonable offense.

Omare said: “The IYC is sure that if similar threats had been issued by youths from other parts of the country, especially the Niger Delta region, communities such as Kaiama, Okerenkoko, Warri, Yenagoa and indeed the entire Niger Delta region would have been under security siege.

“We totally and in strongest words condemn this double standard by the Nigeria security agencies. It is totally unacceptable for security agencies to apply double standard in response to security threats in different parts of the country.

“The standard applied to youth groups and agitators in the south should also be applied to same class of people from the north.

“The questionable position of the security agencies indicates that some very powerful persons in the north and the federal government are behind the Arewa youths.

This fact has already been confirmed by Arewa Youth leader, Yerima Shettima who said that their leaders are behind them.”

According to him, the IYC is confident that if Yerima Shettima and his co-travellers were to be Niger Deltans, they would have been behind bars now.

He said it is on record that Niger Delta activists such as Daniel Ezekiel, Jones Abiri and others are still in detention without trial for mere allegations of threat to national security.

He faulted the silence of the Nigerian security, calling on them to rise above politics and stop the double standard in the performance of their duties.

He said the Arewa youth leaders who issued the treasonable quit notice to Igbos in the north should be made to account for their actions to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and properties as a result of their quit notice.
