The educational standard of Ghana is recognized globally as better and higher than in Nigeria. There are about five major state universities, namely: the University of Legona, University of Science and Technology Kwame Nkrumah, University of Cape Coast, the University of Development Studies Tamale, and the University of Education Winneba.

The main feature of the private institutions in the country is that they are branches of state institutions. This implies that graduates of private schools receive degrees and certificates from the public universities to which they belong.

Until the middle of the twentieth century, education was the main objective of Christian missionaries. They moved to Ghana from Europe in order to share Christian beliefs and enlightenment to local tribes. The government of the colony expressed support for missionary undertakings. Also, the supporters of education were wealthy local people who got rich on cocoa beans trade, the main export of the country.

There are four medical schools in Ghana. Students who graduate from any of these medical schools receive an MBChB degree and a doctorate. Then they are temporarily registered with the Ghana Medical and Dental Board. At the end of the compulsory 2 years residency done in hospitals, these doctors are permanently registered with the Medical and Dental Council. They have the opportunity to practice as a general practitioner.

After a permanent registration, doctors are able to specialize in any of the different fields according to the options created by the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons or Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. General physicians (doctors) are also hired from time to time by Ghana Health Service to work in rural areas as primary care physicians.
