The Kano emirate Council on Saturday, September 2, held the Durbar festival as part of activities to mark the Sallah festivities.
The event which was held at the Emir of Kano’s Palace in Kano was graced by thousands of the city’s residents and it brought out the rich cultural history of the Kano emirate.
In attendance was the Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano state and many important individuals in and outside of the state government.

The Durbar festival began centuries ago to celebrate the return of the Hausa ruler and his entourage from successful wars, where there is display of horsemanship, elaborate dresses, war weapons amongst numerous others.
The festival evolved over the years to become an event to enable the Emir address the public and officially visit the governor, as stipulated during the colonial times.
The Durbar activity is a procession of the Emir and his district heads, in coordinated arrangements.
Each district head has his entourage on horseback in remarkable ensembles of different roles , such as the Yan tauri (the warriors), makadan hakimi (the musicians) , yayan hakimi (princes) amongst others, with a banner indicating each group.
While the Emir as the last on the procession, has his own special entourage which includes the sarkin tuta (chief of flags), wawan sarki (royal jester), Yan bindiga (royal gunmen), yan tauri (royal swordsmen) amongst numerous others.

Meanwhile the Deputy Governor of Borno, Alhaji Usman Durkwa, on Friday, September 1, described the 2017 Eid-el-Kabir festival as the most peaceful celebration recorded in the state in the last seven years.

Durkwa told newsmen in Maiduguri that the festivities were generally peaceful in the state. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that thousands of Muslims faithful observed prayers in various locations in Maiduguri and other major towns in the state.
