Some traders in Lagos state where billionaire kidnapper Chukwudi Dumeme Onwuamadike was arrested have asked the police to beam their searchlights on two areas for his alleged informants.

The traders, according to the New Telegraph, urged the police to comb the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA) as well as the Alaba International Market in the state.

Popularly known as Evans, the kidnapper was finally arrested in his Magodo mansion in Lagos resulting in celebrations among the police and many Nigerians.

“Most of these persons used as informants may never get to meet Evans. But they would freely give him information through phone on traders’ business empires,” one of the traders said.

Another trader who refused to mention his name, suggested that some of the boys and men who hustle for customers on behalf of rich traders could also be informants to Evans.

He said: “I have been in this market for a while and thousands of traders here are informants.

“They spy on their masters and

later sell them out to robbers and kidnappers. Sometimes, these informants may be business partners and relatives.

“The case of asking for $1 million ransom and getting it paid is a high profile operation…You must not rule out the fact that he used informants here to know all he wanted to know.”

Ojukwu Cosmas and Uche Okoroafor, two of Evans’ victims, were made to cough out $1 million each after they were abducted.

It is noteworthy that the two men are successful businessmen at ASPAMDA and Alaba International Market.

The report quoted a source in the market as saying: “There is nothing that does not happen here.

“The market is so large and swallows up everything; how many cases can one report?

“When you see these criminal elements in the market, you would know them by their moves. “You find such characters at beer parlour after business hours.

“They’ll claim they came to buy auto parts, but wanted to relax in the beer parlour. They will capture the attention of inexperienced and gullible traders who will start singing like canary, telling them about their bosses businesses and successes.

“So when these high profile robberies and abductions take place, police shouldn’t rule out use of informants.”
