1000 Nigerians died in risky journeys to Europe -Senate

– Senate has given figures of Nigerians that lost their lives during their journey to European countries

– Lawmakers are now making efforts to limit the rate at which Nigerians lose their lives while in search of greener pastures

– Senate consequently called on the committee on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora to investigate the causes and proffer solutions to the problems of illegal migration

Senate has revealed that more than 1000 Nigerians have lost their lives during the process of searching for greener pastures in European countries.

The information was revealed in the Senate on Wednesday, June 7, that those people died in an unsuccessful illegal migration to Europe through the Mediterranean route.

Reports have it that the lawmakers also resolved that the committee on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora should investigate the causes and proffer solutions to the problems of illegal migration.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the illegal migration routes taken by Nigerians include Sahara desert, Mediterranean Sea, Libya, Morocco and Algeria.

Senator Francis Alimikhena (APC) Edo was among those who raised the alarm that Nigeria has become a case study for irregular migration worldwide.

Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) in his contribution, agreed with the motion saying institutional frameworks would resolve illegal

migration.

“It is a moral duty for us as a nation and also a parliament to intervene and see that our young ones stop crossing the Sahara.

‘’Solutions to issues like his has to do with institutional frameworks and multinational task boards.

”This motion will bring to spot light the mind of young people in search of greener pastures.” he said.

On his part, deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu (PDP, Enugu) stated that ICT and industrialisation would address the issue while urging youths to believe that their future lies in the African continent.

Meanwhile, ZENITHBLOG.com earlier reported that not less than 44 migrants, including women and babies died of thirst while on their way to Libya.

Local officials on Thursday, June 1, said the migrants died after their vehicle broke down in the desert of northern Niger.

According to Lawal Taher, department head for the Red Cross in the Bilma region, six survivors walked to a remote village where they said those they were travelling with, mostly from Ghana and Nigeria died.
