One doctor attends to 6,000 patients in Nigeria

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that the current ratio of doctor to patient in Nigeria is at one doctor to 600 patients.

Professor Titus Ibekwe, the Head of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department of the University of Abuja, disclosed this on Wednesday, January 25.

Prof Ibekwe said that this ratio is bad for healthcare delivery in the country. The professor who is also the former Vice President of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) said that the medical personnel in Nigeria were constantly overwhelmed by the large number of patients.

The professor said a lot of healthcare facilities in the country are outdated while many are also dilapidated.

He said: “Today as we speak, the current WHO performance rating places Nigeria 187th out of 191 nations. That is really deplorable and not expected of the giant of Africa.

“The WHO recommends a minimum of one doctor to 600 patients but recent analysis carried out by the NMA shows that in Nigeria, one doctor is attending to 6,000 patients.

“Another issue is healthcare financing. In 2001, right here in Abuja, all the African Heads of State gathered and came up with a resolution which was applauded by WHO and the United Nations that they will dedicate 15 percent of their country’s annual budgets to health, but since then till today, the best we have achieved is six percent.

“In the 2017 national budget, the allocation to health is 4.1 per cent while in 2016 it was 4.4 per cent and we are talking of minimum of 15 per cent to achieve basic medical care that a citizen needs.

“The National Health Act took the country 10 years before it was passed and this is three years after its passage, implementation has not commenced and every year one million children die, 56,000 women die from issues around pregnancy.

“Nigeria still rank number one in issue of HIV/AIDs, second in woman that died from pregnancy-related causes, one in childhood death and tuberculosis.”

Meanwhile, doctors under the aegis of the NMA have lamented the poor facilities in the country while also lashing at President Muhammadu Buhari and other top government officials for seeking medical treatment abroad.

Justen Charters, a deputy editor and commentator for Independent Journal Review, has blasted those who are demonstrating across the US over the recent executive order placing a temporary ban on seven Muslim-dominated countries by President Trump.

According to the journalist, many people protesting the ban are hypocrites.

He said none of those protesting came out to protest against the rampage of Boko Haram in Nigeria and other atrocities over the world.

“When Boko Haram came through Nigeria like a battering ram and took over village after village, beheading innocents and burning and pillaging, where were you? Were you calling Congress and telling them we can’t stand for this? Were you out in the streets in the thousands? I think not,” he said

His full statement as posted on his Facebook page read:

“To all the anti-Trump protesters who are trying to take the moral high ground,

“President Obama was in office when genocide was happening in Syria. Assad crossed the ‘red line’ on multiple occasions, and Obama continued to talk tough but did nothing.

“Over a quarter of a million people died in Syria during Obama’s time in office. He didn’t go after Assad. I didn’t see a massive crowd of you at the White House protesting. Women, children, dying. Sarin gas attacks, war crimes. Where were you? Where were your signs?

“When James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Adam Kassig and Kayla Mueller were all murdered by ISIS, where were your candlelight vigils? Where were the huge crowds for the innocents who were killed? I must have missed them.

“When Boko Haram came through Nigeria like a battering ram and took over village after village, beheading innocents and burning and pillaging, where were you? Were you calling Congress and telling them we can’t stand for this? Were you out in the streets in the thousands? I think not.

“You care about Sudan? Genocide has been taking place on and off again in Sudan since 2003. Did you march against the murders? Did you scream at the top of your lungs for humanity and for Bush or Obama to do something after an estimated 300,000 died? No.

“And Yemen, since when did you care about Yemen, children having been starving in mass in Yemen for years. Their emaciated bodies, their sunken eyes. I don’t recall you marching against those injustices either.

“Were you out in force when ISIS ran through Iraq and was killing people in the thousands? Beheading families, burning people alive. I don’t remember an Anti-ISIS protest at the White House at the time. I don’t remember thousands showing up for innocently murdered Iraqis.

“But now you’re out at the White House, telling people that you care about these people. Doubtful. You’re out there right now because it’s become popular. You want to be part of the crowd. Too bad you stayed silent when you could have actually made a difference.”

Meanwhile, Nora, an eight-year-old girl was among 30 civilians, 10 women and children reportedly killed in President Trump’s first military order.

Five Boko Haram sponsors arrested in military raid

The theatre commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor, has confirmed the arrest of some Boko Haram collaborators.

Two prominent politicians and a traditional ruler affiliated with the Boko Haram group have been arrested during a military raid in Borno state.

The Sun reports that the politicians, who are known in government circle, were arrested early this week by detectives and troops from Operation Lafiya Dole, the counter-insurgency military team.

A source disclosed that one of the arrested alleged collaborators who is also an Islamic spiritualist, had fled the state when he learnt military men were on his trail.

He was however arrested along Maiduguri-Jos Road, on his way to one of the north central states.

A second suspect was said to be a thug often called ECOMOG in Borno and an aide to some politicians in the state, according to military source.

A military personnel disclosed that a traditional ruler from a Borno community and two popular Islamic clerics were among those arrested following intelligence about their alleged link with Boko Haram.

“More revelations are coming and more people may be arrested in days to come, the source said.

The arrest of the suspected Boko Haram collaborators was confirmed by the theatre commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor.

The commander however refused to disclose the identities of the arrested persons, insisting that doing so will jeopardise investigation.

“It is true we have arrested some people. They may be known faces. We started picking them one by one. We’re taking them now and we are still investigating them so I can’t give you any detail,” he said.

Meanwhile, the federal government has confirmed the recovery of a treasure trove of materials from the “decimated” Boko Haram, further calling on the media and the general public to be vigilant.

According to the government, the alleged decimated group has shifted its strategy towards dominating the media space, propagating a perverted version of Shariah law and giving the impression that it is still holding territory.

The government’s warning is contained in a statement by the minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

The statement made available to ZENITHBLOG.com in the afternoon of Tuesday, January 31, 2017 appealed to the general public and the media to ensure that they do not unwittingly provide the terrorists with the oxygen of publicity that they desperately need.

Secret CIA files reveal how Nigeria suffered economy decline when Buhari took over power in 1983 (see evidence)

A declassified Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) report has revealed how the Nigerian economy practically collapsed when President Muhammadu Buhari came into power as a military president in 1983.

The young Buhari alongside his allies in the military had toppled the democratically elected government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in a bloodless coup.

The CIA files revealed that the Nigerian economy reached its peak in 1981 but steadily declined under Buhari’s watch from 1983.

”By 1984, real GDP had dropped to the level of a decade earlier, while the population had increased by 25 million to more than 90 million,” the report stated.

Under General Buhari’s watch, the official consumer price index, which usually understates inflation, rose by over 500% and Nigeria’s foreign debt increased from $2billion to about $23billion.

Nigeria’s debt service also rose from 2 percent of export earnings in 1974 to 36 percent in 1984.

At the same time, oil revenues peaked in 1980 at $25 billion but the declined to less than half that amount by 1984.

The report said: ”By the end of 1984, political stability in Nigeria seemed as elusive as economic development.

”The current Federal Military Government (FMG), which seized power 31 December 1983, has had no more success than its civilian predecessor in reversing the economic decline.”

The report stated that the Buhari regime has concentrated on short term of foreign exchange crisis rather than on solving Nigeria’s fundamental economic problems.

The 1983 situation is somewhat similar to what Nigeria is currently experienceing under President Muhammadu Buhari, now 74.

According to the Nation, El-Rufai said he is neither a religious bigot nor ethnic jingoist who will organise crisis in his state.

The governor told the Senate committee that his administration inherited three main problems of cattle rustling, urban gang called “Shara Suka” and communal killings.

He said: “When we came in we met three main problems on ground, cattle rustling, urban gang and communal killings.

We have bought bullet proof vest and vans for security agencies. We have committed N4 billion in support of security agencies in the state.

“The state government will continue to support the security agencies in the state even though it is the responsibility of the federal government.”

The governor called on the Nigerian government to increase the funding of the security agencies to enable them adequately deal with the attacks in the southern part of the state and other internal security challenges across the country.

Meanwhile, Blessing Agbomhere, the deputy director of Buhari Support Organisation (BHS) has claimed Kaduna state governor gave the order for initial arrest of Apostle Johnson Suleman which was thwarted by Governor Fayose of Ekiti state.

Agbomhere said El-Rufai has a personal vendetta against Apostle Suleman and he is using the DSS to fight against him.

Agbomhere who is in support of Apostle Suleman’s preaching about Fulani herdsmen said rather than the DSS allowing themselves to be used by Governor El-Rufai against Apostle Suleman, the agency should focus more on how to create peace in the disturbed part of Southern kaduna.

Photos emerge of Apostle Suleman in IGP office where he explained his “kill Fulani herdsmen” statement

Pictures have emerged of Apostle Johnson Suleman in the office of the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris to clear the air on his statement that his members should kill Fulani herdsmen.

The religious leader had reported to the office of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday, January 30 following a botched attempt to arrest him in Ekiti.

Suleman had been caught on video encouraging his members in to kill any Fulani herdsmen seen around his church although he defended this that he was also calling on self-defense and not inciting religious violence.

He had also spoke about the decision of the DSS to invite him for questioning saying it was in good order.
