Nigeria at 57 market survey: Market environment has never been this terrible – Lagos traders lament

– Business owners and traders at some of the major markets in Lagos state continues to lament over poor sales

– Findings by ZENITHBLOG.com at Ijora 7UP market, Lagos, showed a reduction in the prices of some good like rice, garri, beef, groundnut oil, palm oil, tomatoes, pepper and onion and an increment in the price of foodstuff items like egusi, ogbono, crayfish and dry pepper

– A time when one would have expected to see buyers trooping into the market, expecting an increased market activities and sales, everything appears ‘dry’

– Traders at the market bemoaned the negative impact of poor sales, bad roads but are optimistic that the change would come in due time

Business owners and traders at some of the major markets in Lagos state have continued to lament over poor sales. Findings by ZENITHBLOG.com at Ijora 7 UP market, Lagos showed a reduction in the prices of some goods and an increment in the price of others.

The survey revealed that the poor sales came as part of the after effects of the economic recession plaguing the nation. Also, the construction of new shops that is on-going at the market affects the level of patronage and position of the traders. According to them, the new shop worth about N3 million naira, open place cost N250,000 and not all traders can afford such amount.

A time when one would have expected to see buyers trooping into the market, expecting a hike in prices of goods and services, increased market activities and sales, everything appears dry as some traders were seen sitting idle in their shops and others take a nap.

A trader identified simply as Ndidi, who sells clothes at the market spoke with ZENITHBLOG.com, explained that there is no money in circulation which thus affects the purchasing pattern of customers. He maintained that it was far worse than what they experienced in previous years.

Adding that, the increase in the cost of goods is one of the reasons customers do not patronize him any longer:

Sales and rate of turnover have been very poor. Many customers do not have money, while traders have been turned into bench warmers in the market. Market has never been this bad. Sales have never been this terrible, quite unlike what we experienced in previous administration.”

“A round neck shirt cost N2,500 upwards depending on the size and brand. A jean trouser goes for N3,500 upwards depending on the size, the design on it and as well the brand. A female top goes for N2,000 while a female pencil jeans goes for N2,500. People hardly patronize us these days, due to the cheap ones they get from second hand items. We just sit idle but how can a hungry man who is still thinking of how to survive remembers to shop for brand new wares this period? Our customers are complaining. The government should do something about this before things get out of hand,” he suggests.

At the open market, further investigations by our correspondent revealed that sellers of foodstuffs, food commodities, beef, and perishable items like tomatoes, pepper, fish, provisions and cosmetics were most affected by the poor sales.

When ZENITHBLOG.com visited the stall of Baba Hafusat, a butcher at the market, he lamented on poor state of the economy, calling on the government to quickly intervene because the people are suffering.

“Nigerians are really suffering, there is no money in circulation and things are costly. The cow we used to buy for N70,000 naira now sells for N120,000 and when we begin to sell beef in an expensive rate, people will not patronize us because of the high cost. So, we decide to sell cheaper yet, we end up not making profit. The meat we sell before for N1,800, now cost N1,200 or less: still, we struggle over customers and at the end of the day, we do not make profit. We have been here since morning and as you can see, I have not sold anything profitable but N500,” he said.

A meat seller known as Alfa Ibrahim complained bitterly about the drop in sales due to the poor state of the economy.

“Before now, I make an average of about N10,000 to N15,000 daily; but these days, I would have to stay here till late in the evening before I would be able to sell meat worth N3,000.

“As I speak, my children are at home, my extended families are there to take care of and the house bills are there too but how can I meet up with these huge expenses when sales have dropped completely. We return the meet and refrigerate it here in the market. We still pay for the security of the meat as well,” he said.

Benedict, another boutique owner, attributed high price of goods and low sales to the fluctuating rate of dollar and naira. He however maintained that once the exchange rate is regulated, the price of goods will be normalized.

“The goods we sell are being purchased outside the country and thus, the fluctuating rate of dollar has not only affected our level of sales but has affected our purchasing power. How? It is only when we finish selling the previous goods that we can go to purchase a new one. But the reverse is the case, as the market is vacant, no buyers trooping in large numbers, all thanks to the economic situation of the country and the bad road in the market. Based on this, the difference will definitely reflect in the prices of the items,” he said.

Mr Isaac, a foodstuff dealer at the market, said traders only watch people go around pricing goods without buying them. He attributed the bad situation to the poor state of the economy and low income of workers’.

“We are tired and frustrated. The prices of goods keep fluctuating. We do not know what is really happening to our economy. Right now as I speak, some of the traders’ only sell their goods at an affordable price just to retain their customers so as not to result into loss. It is really not convenient selling at the same amount you purchase an item. But this is the only option left for us to sell off the goods.

“A bag of rice (Aroso) cost N15,000 and rice (Agric) cost N16,000, the demand for Agric is higher than that of Aroso. People prefer Agric because it is sweeter than Aroso. A big bag of beans (Oloyin) cost N50,000 at the market , while beans (Oloone) with about 80 derica, cost N 45,000. But a bag of beans (Olotu) cost N54,000. If you want to purchase a small bag of garri (White), it cost N10,200 and the garri (Yellow) cost N11,500. It is cheaper now, that is why we even manage to record low sales unlike when they were very expensive, our customers did not even step their foot into the market.

“We often see people walk around the market pricing goods but they do not buy anything. It is so painful. There is no money in circulation because workers are being owed salaries while some companies lay off staffs. All this is affecting sales and no one understands the real state of the country now despite governments’ intervention in reviving the economy from recession. Before I make nothing less than N25,000 to N40,000 daily, but now I struggles to sell foodstuff worth 10,000 daily.

“This is not a good one we anticipated for. Everyone is in confusion over the way affairs of the nation are handled. We do not even understand the economic policy of this present administration. People are saving their money, they are not buying things in large quantities anymore. Everything is just difficult for people. I just hope things get better in the coming days,” he hoped.

For Iya Hassan, a graduate turned trader who sells palm oil, groundnut oil and other food condiments at the market, sales have been very poor.

She said: “People no longer patronize me like before but I appreciate God for the few ones that are still coming. This is because they found out that the prices of goods have become affordable. Before, when groundnut oil was very expensive, the retailer who patronizes me was about three out of eight all due to the fact that sales are poor. Right now, I try really hard to sell my goods. I purchase my goods from Cotonou because it is very cheap compare to other countries. A 25-litre of groundnut-oil cost between N12,500- N 13,500, while that of red-oil cost N11,500.

“I graduated year 2009, there was no job, since then I joined my mother in this business. But right from that year till now, sales have never been this poor. It is really hard for us to sell off our goods lately.”

When ZENITHBLOG.com visited the section of foodstuff commodities shops, the traders who are mainly from the eastern part of the country were seen sitting idle in their shops while those who own stands abandoned their table with goods due to poor sales.

Also, most of them declined speaking with our correspondent, responding angrily that sales are poor while others informed that sales have nosedived due to the economic downturn and scarcity of resources.

“We have been sitting like this since morning, no sales. The price of a basket of tomatoes varies. You buy according to the amount you have. A small basket of tomatoes cost N7,000 while a smaller basket goes for N3,000. But for pepper, I can only afford the small bag of fresh pepper which cost about N4,500 at Mile- 12 market. I can tell you that the smashed tomatoes and pepper are very cheap but they are not healthy for meals. Also, onion is very cheap in the market now. A bag cost about N22,000 for the dry one and the new onion cost about N15,000.

“Our customers are workers and some full housewives; the few ones who patronize us complain bitterly that there is no money and that they are finding it hard to cope with the inflated prices of goods in the market. When they come around, they complain of no money. So they rarely patronize us as usual these days,” Iya Kemi, a trader informed our correspondent.

At the market, buyers are lament over the economic situation of the country, saying it has affected goods and services greatly; adding that there is high rate of inflation.

“The economy is not stable, same with the forex market. This instability in the foreign exchange market has resulted in decline in the standard of living of the populace, increased cost of production which also leads to cost push inflation.

“The prices of goods have increased. Prices of some food items such as rice, beans, and vegetable oil, and crayfish, fresh tomatoes and canned tomatoes have risen and this is affecting households.

Prices of goods appears to be unstable at Ijora 7 UP market, Lagos. Source: Esther Odili.

“For instance, a bag of rice that I bought for N12,000 early 2016 is now sold for N16,500. Golden Penny large macaroni that cost N3,600 before, now goes for N3,750. The retailers attributed the rise to the fluctuation of the naira against the dollar and vice versa,” a consumer who pleaded anonymity informed ZENITHBLOG.com.

A trader at the market, Mrs Ebele who sells egusi, ogbono, crayfish, dried pepper, dried fish and other soup ingredients, said the market situation appeared to be unstable.

“We cannot afford the bag of these items again unlike before, because of the situation of the things. Now, we go for the quantity our purse can afford. For Ogbono, the price is not stable same with Egusi which is relatively low. But, a bag of ogbono now cost N90,000 depending on the market location, the size of the bag and the type of ogbono. But it is very very expensive. Egusi is relatively low; a bag of egusi (Handpeel) can be purchased from N55,000 upwards while that of egusi (Machine) can be purchased from N60,000 upwards, because the bag is bigger than the former and the quantity is higher as well.

Price of ogbono, crayfish and stock fish still on the rise at Ijora 7 UP market, Lagos. Source: Esther Odili.

“For crayfish, it keeps fluctuating but it is fair for now. Some people thought because it is rainy now, the price will be lower but it is not true. The big nylon (patala) still cost about N26,000 while some buy one big nylon for N20,000, but the cheaper crayfish is not always neat and fresh. Dried pepper has become very expensive too; a derica cost N700, same with stock fish and dry fish.

“Prices of food items change daily and traders say it is caused by fluctuation of the naira to the dollar. I am not interested in that fluctuation because some households and indeed, families, are finding it difficult to feed; hence, they do not buy their usual quantity. We appeal to the Federal Government to urgently intervene and revive the economy because it is not easy for us,” she added.

Traders therefore expressed hope that things would improve once the economy is normalised.

Meanwhile, ZENITHBLOG.com correspondent recently visited the market to ask if the report that recession had ended in the country was true.

“He is a Yorubaman who has the courage and conviction to say that he wants to be President. Why would I not stand with him and attend the launching of his campaign?

“I believe that he would make an excellent President and effect the necessary changes and restructurring that our country desperately needs.

“I am very proud of Ayo Fayose and I never desert or abandon my friends. He is and will always be my friend and brother.”

Meanwhile, ZENITHBLOG.com previously reported that Fayose has said the imminent defeat of President Muhammadu Buhari in a free and fair election in 2019 is the main reason the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government is harassing and intimidating his aides and associates.

Fayose also said the “blunt truth” he told Nigerians during his declaration of interest that Buhari and the APC had nothing good to offer Nigeria had pierced the conscience of APC leaders and given them wounded heart.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that he, however, said he wouldn’t be intimidated into abandoning a “divine project” of rescuing the country from maladministration.

He lamented that Nigeria was still operating in the past with no qualified leadership to revitalize the economy.

His words: “For me the country has failed, If any body tells you that Nigeria is doing well, tell them it is a lie.

“They said that we are out of recession but almost all Nigerians are still feeling greatly the impact of recession.”

He urged the governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, to always tell the people he is ruling the truth adding that the people will trust and believe him the more.

Notorious kidnapper Evans allegedly seeks Bible in Kirikiri prison, sheds tears in court (photo)

Notorious kidnapper Chukwudumebi Onwuamaegbu also known as Evans who was arrested after evading the Nigerian police for long has reportedly repented in prisons.

According to Vanguard, the kidnapper requested for a Bible when members of a Pentecostal church visited Kirikiri prison.

Evans was remanded in Kirikiri after he pleaded guilty to kidnap charges in court.

It was reported that a group of Christians visited the prison on Sunday, a few weeks after Evans was remanded.

Evans reportedly asked for a Bible after the group requested to see him. It was gathered that the bewildered preachers obliged to his request and prayed for his soul.

The leader of the group was said to have announce that Evans’ behaviour is a show of repentance.

ZENITHBLOG.com recently reported that the kidnapper’s confession to the police led to the arrest of other criminals.

According to Vanguard, sources at the prison revealed that Evans shed uncontrollable tears when he was brought before the court during his trial.

The source said: “We were in prison with other suspects that day when Evans was brought to court with the official vehicle of a top police officer in Lagos. He was shedding tears uncontrollably. Then, after he was remanded, we took him to Kirikiri prison where he will stay pending his trial. Immediately we entered the prison yard with him, there was a tumultuous ovation by the inmates. In fact, he was giving a presidential treatment by the inmates. It was so much that he started responding by raising his hands with a white handkerchief while the resounding ovation continued. “That must have been why strict instructions were quickly given about him over his stay. We have a very strict Deputy Controller here and he planted informants who send him daily reports on the activities of both the inmates and prison officials. His strictness made it impossible for Evans, in particular, to have access to telephones or any electronic gadget inside his cell. In fact, he is staying in a private cell and only comes out to meet other prisoners under strict observations. We do not allow any visitor to see him. So far, the only visitors who have met with him were his brother and lawyer and they did that while being closely watched. Our Oga always insist that they come to his office to meet with him and they must converse in English language so that he would understand whatever they say.”

Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor has stated that sureties of the IPOB leader should not entertain any fear over the disappearance of his client.

In an interview with Daily Sun, Ejiofor said the circumstances of the present case had gone beyond the sureties’ control.

He said the federal government have a duty to produce his client before the case makes any headway.

He said: “The point is that you cannot under the circumstance lay hands on the sureties, because the circumstance that presented itself is such had gone beyond the sureties’ control. In legal parlance, it’s called force majeure. It’s not a situation they would be able to control.

“The court is a human being; it can listen to our application. If at all this incident never took place and by tomorrow we start looking for Nnamdi Kanu, they will be told to go and produce him.

“But in this case, Nnamdi Kanu had been visible; moving around, going places, meeting people and was very certain of coming to Abuja before now to face trial, so, people who attacked him, killed people in his house, wounded people and arrested people, should be in a position to show us where he is.”

He added that Kanu’s whereabouts now lies with the army, adding that it’s out of the sureties hands and they cannot be held liable.

Ejiofor stated that the military should would have extended invitation to him instead of invading his private residence.

“Forget about the lies they’ve been telling; they must produce him. By the process we have initiated, if they have killed my client; they should come and tell the court.

“Then we will now know what to do, because he has to be given befitting burial if at all such thing happened. But God forbid!,” he added.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has asked the Nigerian government to clarify the status and whereabouts of Kanu.

The British government said it had asked the Nigerian government if the British/Nigerian national was alive or dead.

This was disclosed by the press officer, United Kingdom High Commission in Nigeria, Joe Abuku.

– Evans amassed quite a fortune for himself as his ‘business’ boomed, most of which he spent on luxurious houses, cars, and other accessories

– The police has just discovered a multi-million truck yard owned by the notorious kidnapper

Notorious kidnapper and billionaire, Chukwudumeme Onwumadike popularly known as Evans, may have more properties and assets than initially declared.

A report by Daily Sun indicates that policemen attached to the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have uncovered a truck yard which he acquired from the proceeds of kidnapping.

This is even as police detectives have arrested his secretary, one Ngozika Ezeokoye who went into hiding as soon as she learnt that police had nabbed her employer.

Evans had confessed to the police that he used the proceeds from kidnapping to establish several businesses including a haulage company that has not less than 10 trucks.

He was said to have accessed the financial worth of some of his victims who patronised his haulage company.

He also told the police that four of the most recent trucks acquired were gotten from the N150million ransom paid by one of his victims.

Now in police custody, Ngozika claims that she never knew that her boss was into kidnapping.

Her words: “I used to work with a bank till I retired because of the poor condition of work. I got a job with CMT motors in 2015.

“Initially, our warehouse was in Apapa till they moved us to 235 Ago Palace way in Okota in 2016. My job was to take note of trucks that go to work, their destination and amount due for each trip.

“The company has eleven trucks and all the vehicles original documents in my possession. The name of my boss is George Onwuamadike and every money is paid into Chinwuba multi trade limited.

“I was paid N70,000 a month. I only knew about it on TV. I did not run away, I only travelled to visit my Uncle in the village when I received a call that I should bring the documents. I was planning to come to Lagos when the police arrested me.”

ZENITHBLOG.com had reported that Evans had challenged his continued detention by the police and for not being taken to court.

Boko Haram: UNICEF raises alarm, says 3 million children are out of school in Borno

– The crisis caused by the Boko Haram insurgency has had a negative impact on the educational sector in northeast Nigeria

– Over 57 per cent of schools in Borno are closed due to the insurgency

– Almost 1,400 schools have been destroyed with the majority unable to open

The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) on Friday, September 29 said an estimated three million children need emergency education support occasioned by the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast.

UNICEF’s deputy director, Justin Forsyth, told journalists in Maiduguri that urgent interventions were necessary to address the situation.

Forsyth said that over 57 per cent of basic and post basic schools in Borno were closed down due to the crisis caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.

His words: “An estimated three million children are in need of emergency education support at the start of the new academic year.

“Children in the northeast are living through so much horror; in addition to malnutrition, violence and outbreak of cholera.

“The attacks on schools is in danger of creating a lost generation of children threatening their future and countries.

“To date, nearly one million children have been displaced by the crisis and 450,000 of them under the age of five are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year.”

Forsyth explained that UNICEF in collaboration with government and partners were working to rehabilitate schools, classrooms and training of teachers to build a stronger education system.

The UNICEF official disclosed that the organisation in concert with development partners had so far enrolled 750,000 children in schools, established 350 temporary learning centres and distributed 94,000 packs of instructional materials to the displaced children in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

“However, some children living in displaced camps in Borno state are actually benefitting from education for the first time in their lives.

“At Muna Garage Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri, an estimated 90 per cent of children were enrolled in schools for the first time,” he said.

Forsyth noted that the prompt interventions by the government and humanitarian organisation had assisted to mitigate malnutrition and famine in the war ravaged region.

The director stressed the need for a more comprehensive approach and greater commitments to address education, malnutrition and health needs of children affected by the insurgency in the region.

Forsyth also commended the Federal and Borno governments over their commitment to reinvigorate the education sector and address the humanitarian crisis in the state.

He said that he would report to the organisation’s headquarters on the situation to enable it scale up activities in the region, adding that UNICEF is committed to the protection of children fundamental rights.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Forsyth is in Borno for a three-day working visit, to appraise the UNICEF humanitarian interventions in the region.

The UNICEF chief visited IDP camps in Banki and Maiduguri where he interacted with families and children displaced by the insurgency.

UNICEF operates in 190 countries to promote the rights and wellbeing of children, safeguard and guaranty their rights to education and health as well as protection from violence and abuse. (NAN)

Meanwhile, the immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has advised the federal government to pay critical attention to the high rate of maternal mortality in the country.

Mimiko gave the advise while speaking to journalists, on Friday, September 22, at the Chatham House in London. The former governor delivered a paper on “Improving Access to Health Services for All” using his administration’s achievement in maternal and child health as a case study.

We are safe here! Igbos in the north dismiss calls to return home ahead of October 1

– The leadership of the Igbo community in Northern Nigeria has shunned calls urging them to return home

– They described the renewed calls as nothing but mischief

– The Coalition of Northern Youths October 1 quit notice to Igbos living in northern Nigeria has since been withdrawn

The leadership of the Igbo community in Northern Nigeria has shunned renewed calls urging them to return home ahead of Sunday, October 1, The Nation reports.

An association of lawyers in Anambra state, on Thursday, September 28, advised Igbos to vacate the north, whether the threat would be carried out or not.

Reacting to the call, the vice president of Igbo Delegate Assembly in 19 northern states, Chris Nnoli, said the call by the so called lawyers was condemnable.

He further described the call as nothing but mischief, while expressing his disappointment and dismay that professionals like lawyers could make such call.

“We are not in support of such call. And if lawyers actually made such call, because I also read the story in a national daily, then it is very unfortunate and we are not going heed it,” he said.

Nnoli, who is also the president-general of Igbo Community Welfare Association (ICWA) in Kaduna state, added that October 1 remains Nigeria’s national day and they will all celebrate together as Nigerians.

He said no Igbo man living in the north will heed such call because every Nigerian under the constitution of the country has the right to live anywhere they feel like within the country.

This was as Yerima Shettima, one of the leaders of the Coalition of Northern Youths, assured Igbos in the north that no harm will come their way on October 1 or after.

Shettima described the lawyers as mischief makers and enemies of Nigeria.

His words: “We are a people of honour and respect. We honour our words. So, the Igbo in the north can go about their normal business and should not listen to mischief makers.

“We have sensitised our members to ensure the safety of every Nigerian, especially the Igbo, and we can assure you that nothing will happen to the Igbo by October 1 and even beyond.”

Meanwhile, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has condemned plans by the Kaduna state government to arrest leaders of the Arewa youth coalition.

Spokesman of the NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi, stated that the Kaduna state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has no moral stand to order for the arrest of the Arewa youths, who he said woke Nigeria from its slumber.

Don't try it! Northern elders warn El-Rufai against arresting Arewa youth leaders

– The Northern Elders Forum has issued stern a warning to Kaduna state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai

– The forum condemned the plan to arrest members of the Coalition of Northern Groups

– The Kaduna state government had gotten an arrest warrant on members of the youth group

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has condemned plans by the Kaduna state government to arrest members of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG).

Spokesman of the NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi, stated that the Kaduna state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has no moral stand to order for the arrest of the Arewa youths, who he said woke Nigeria from its slumber.

The Kaduna state government had on Thursday, September 28 announced that it obtained a bench warrant from the court to arrest members of the CNG who gave October 1 as deadline for Igbos living in the North to quit or be forced out of the region.

The CNG has since withdrawn following the intervention of the Borno state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima.

Professor Abdullahi told Leadership: “The government owns the power to arrest whoever they want to arrest, but I hope that they would arrest the youths and put them on trial in the court of law that belongs to Nigerians and not the ones they set up.

“We know that the government of El-Rufai doesn’t even obey the law or court orders. I supported the youths’ declaration. They did a good job and by waking up Nigeria from its sleep.”

But the Kaduna state police command maintained last night that the warrant of arrest on the Arewa youths from the court of law will be fully implemented.

The state commissioner of police, Agyole Abeh, said, “Any warrant of arrest from a court will be carried.”

Details of the warrant of arrest on the Arewa Youths showed that the offences committed by the accused persons include:

– Inciting disturbance punishable under section 78 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state 2017

– Disturbing public peace punishable under section 77 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state 2017

– Injurious falsehood punishable under section 373 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state 2017

– Unlawful assembly punishable under section 66, and

– Criminal conspiracy punishable under section 59 of the penal code laws of Kaduna State 2017

Meanwhile, ahead of the October 1 quit notice deadline previously issued by the Arewa youths, Igbo indigenes resident in northern Nigeria have been advised to return back to the southeast, by some concerned lawyers in Onitsha, Anambra state.

The lawyers – Samuel Chukwukelu, Ben Okoko and Maurice Efobi – made their comments while speaking to newsmen in Onitsha on Thursday, September 28.

The lawyers advised Igbos to vacate the north, whether the threat would be carried out or not and despite the fact that the quit notice had been revoked by the Arewa youths.

The patriotism of soldiers drafted for the Python Dance II is legendary – Analyst (Opinion)

Editor’s note: Nkechi Odoma, an Abuja based analyst in this piece, analysed the operation carried out by some soldiers of the Nigerian military in the south east region recently.

Odoma commending the military said the solider who were deployed for the “Operation Python II” were patriotic in carrying out their duty.

Before now, screaming the word soldiers anywhere in Nigeria would attract instant public panic and hysteria. Nigerian military and especially soldiers had a disgusting public aura. They had an unenviable tag as unfriendly professionals, brutes, barbaric and torturers of civilians.

It was bloody for a “bloody civilian” to inspire military instincts in a soldier, anytime, anywhere. Any civilian victim of a soldier’s intemperate anger was sure of his path to his instant extinction by the demons of hell on earth, before advancing the gates of hell fire.

But such dispositions and beastliness in soldiers have ebbed out surprisingly under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The appointment of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai was informed by several reasons, which also included the inclination of the Presidency to reform, reposition and re-professionalize the Nigerian Army.

Undeniably, Gen. Buratai has handled this assignment expertly. These days, the portrait of an average Nigerian soldier anywhere oozes with discipline, professionalism, friendliness and uniquely sociable.

Nigerians can concede defiantly that in the last two years, Nigerian soldiers have been engaged in numerous special assignments in almost every part of the country. Soldiers have repressed the tempo of militancy in the Niger Delta and determinedly at the verge of the final lethal blow to Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria’s north east.

Neither the armed bandits and cattle rustlers in the Northwest have had the grace to overwhelm civil security and civilians anymore nor their marauding armed comrades terrorizing Nigerians in the Middle Belt, as evidenced in the herders/farmers clashes.

READ ALSO: British government queries FG over Nnamdi Kanu’s whereabouts

Insurrectional groups, which have assumed the character of terrorists have kept grumbling and groaning. Soldiers are reinventing their absurd radicalism and repugnant fanatical ideologies to make them better human beings to co-inhabit with other Nigerians peacefully.

They preach repentance or resort to combat where necessary for public interest. What is more fascinating is the friendly mien, the civic decorum and the infinite zeal of soldiers on special assignments to passionately protect the human rights of Nigerians.

The ongoing Operation Python Dance II in Southeast Nigeria, translated into the Igbo vernacular as “Egwu Eke II” is one such rewarding operations to fortify internal security undertaken by the Nigerian Army.

In 2016, the clarion call on soldiers necessitated the launch of Operation Python Dance I to cleanse the region of armed criminals who had unrestrictedly seized the peace and security of the south east.

The success of the operation resounded in more ways than imagined, just like what the Army replicated elsewhere in Nigeria. Nigerians now perceive soldiers more as friends and protectors, than trumpeters of war or tormentors of the civilian population. No intention to malign, but today’s Nigerian soldiers are more friendly than the Police.

Operation Egwu Eke II: Soldier, na our true friend! (Opinion)

Operation Egwu Eke II has definitely attracted some few negative remarks. It is not unexpected, as only a narrow-minded person would think of absolute acceptance of actions of government. In fact, divergent views enliven and strengthen democratic engagement.

But what cannot be divorced from the “pythonic dance” anchored by the Nigerian Army, in compliance with a Presidential directive is its desirability and timeliness in salvaging a region which had almost given up hope on a peaceful and secured environment. The name of the operation itself is expressive of the denotations.

READ ALSO: Goodluck Jonathan, Tinubu and 7 other top politicians who may want President Buhari’s job in 2019

In Igbo land, the python snake has a likeable myth to Igbo people. Erudite scholar and literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe explained the value of the python snake to the Igbo in the novel, “Things Fall Apart, ” as a reptile perceived as an ancestral guardian of the people, to the extent no Igbo native dares to kill a python snake in his compound. And if such act is committed in inadvertently, he performs some appeasement rituals and accords the python burial rites similar to a human being.

So, the Army’s choice of the operation as “Python Dance” itself embodies and explicitly explains the protective mission of soldiers in the Southeast region. It is monotonous to reiterate again that the Southeast has been plunged in weird and violent crimes.

Operation Egwu Eke II: Soldier, na our true friend! (Opinion)

The south east like any other region in Nigeria is not immune or insulated from violent crimes. But with the ascendancy of Nnamdi Kanu’s Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), violent crimes engulfed the Southeast and reached a crescendo that submerged the strongest pillars of civil security.

Before the intervention of Operation Python Dance II, an outsider who visits the Southeast and observes the trend could easily run a hasty conclusion that the undignified life of crime delights and pacifies Nigerians.

The falsity of the conclusion is measured by the screams and the near perennial psychological trauma victims of violent crimes precipitated by IPOB keep recounting. It is an indication of strong repulsion to what Kanu and his gangs in IPOB had imposed on the people through crude force.

No responsible and responsive leadership abuses the sacred provision of the Constitution which confers on any leader the onerous responsibility of protecting lives and property of the citizenry. President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) could afford to dilly-dally on some national issues; but dusts off his comic content when threats to public peace, law and order are involved.

READ ALSO: Buhari’s performance is below average, Nigeria will be worst off if he gets second term – Bishop Okogie

The spate of terrorism and other violent acts which besieged Nigeria, when PMB assumed office in 2015 were not only fantastically awful , but potently choked and suffocated Nigeria. It was dragging the nation into the regrettable path of total ruination, had it been allowed to persist. But he acted swiftly, deploying civil security and burdening soldiers where necessary to secure Nigerians.

Operation Python Dance II stems from this mindset and the lamentations of weary citizens over torture by super armed gangs, kidnappers/abductors, assassins and , armed robbers with undisguised affinity with IPOB.

The one -month span of the Operation Python Dance II is slightly two weeks old, but respite has returned to a once troubled Southeast region. The initial suspicions and cynicism, which wrongly ascribed the status of brutes to Nigerian soldiers have eclipsed into eulogies of soldiers as peace descends on the south east.

The notion that soldiers were deployed to crush the Igbo nation into submission to federal forces has vanished into the pleasurable savouring of the peace and serene environment violently deprived them by armed gangs. Disciplined and professional soldiers are diligently prosecuting this assignment flawlessly.

It explains why Nigerians are not stampeded with tales of torture, killings and inhuman treatment of the civilian population even when excited criminals overstretch their bond of radicalism and hostility by unjustifiably attacking soldiers in the line of duty. In extreme situations, soldiers arrest and treat them like fellow compatriots, by serving them food and refreshments.

The ordinary south easterner, much like the elite, with huge investments in the region, which were intermittently threatened by looting by IPOB’s armed criminal gangs, are collectively singing a new song of liberation.

Soldiers have mingled and blended with the civil populace, who are determined now, more than ever, to assist them with privileged information to fish out hardened criminals from the hideouts.

READ ALSO: It’s not our responsibility to declare Nnamdi Kanu wanted – Nigerian Military

And to checkmate any dereliction of duty, the COAS constantly excuses himself from the theatre of war in Maiduguri to supervise the operations of Operation Python Dance II to ensure strict adherence to the best rules of engagement and the religious observance of the human rights of members of host communities.

This cordial interface has railroaded into free medical services to host communities as these soldiers are famed in the north or south.

Just recently, General Buratai personally supervised the free medical services, conducted by troops of Operation Python Dance II. It is their distinctive courtship of host communities anywhere they are deployed on special assignments’.

The patriotism of soldiers drafted for the operation is legendary, as reflected in the physical and psychological content and fitness, excited by prompt payment of salaries and legitimate allowances.

An African adage says, after darkness, comes sunshine. Operation Python Dance II has berthed in the south east and it is performing a marvelous job to the admiration of law abiding and peace-loving Nigerians in the region.

PAY ATTENTION: Read the news on Nigeria’s #1 new app

Those scary or gripped by phobia are the armed criminals, who make mince meal of the police but dread soldiers. They are the elements on the run, as the previously obliterated commercial and night life in the region are nicely reviving.

Those pained by the presence of soldiers and instigating a barrage of campaigns against them are the same criminals who have not been allowed to dupe, loot , assassinate and violently rob the people in preparation for yuletide that are loudly complaining about militarization or arguing for withdrawal of troops.

The new feeling of security traversing the Southeast is best surmised by the Abia state Deputy Governor, Chief Ude Oko Chukwu who has not only poured unreserved appreciation to the Nigeria Army “for this wonderful exercise, ” but pontificated that “Abia is better for it security wise”. It’s the new status of the Southeast engineered by soldiers.

It is the guilty who dreads every shadow; much as it is only doubtful and criminal minds that read from different interpretations and perceptions about the presence of soldiers anywhere. But every peaceful and responsible Nigerian echoes loudly today that “soldier Na your friend!”

It's not our responsibility to declare Nnamdi Kanu wanted – Nigerian Military

– The disappearance of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is still somewhat a mystery

– The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader has not been seen in public after a Nigerian Military raid in his country home in Abia state

– The Defence Headquarters however said it is not interested in declaring the IPOB leader wanted

The Defence Headquarters has said that it has no business declaring IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, wanted.

This was made known by the director, defence information, Major General John Enenche at a press briefing with journalists on Friday, September 29.

Enenche also informed journalists present at the briefing that Kanu was not in military custody and so they couldn’t be held accountable for him.

His words: “Kanu is not in the custody of the military. It is not the responsibility of the DHQ to declare him wanted.

“If the court says that if he does not show up for hearing, it will hold the military responsible, (then) let us wait till that time.

“The military never raided Kanu’s house. I watched the whole operation live on that day. Even I don’t have any right to stop you while passing on a public route.

“I saw that the Biafran Security Service and the Biafran National Guards mounted roadblocks, and the soldiers came out peacefully and said, ‘Boys, let us pass’. But the Biafrans attempted to collect their guns. Nobody went to Kanu’s house or raided him or took him away.”

He also clarified that the military was not involved in the proscription of IPOB.

“The statement of the DHQ on IPOB’s activities is not opposed to what the army chief came out to say. Did we say IPOB was proscribed? No. But some people had a mindset and were in a hurry to attack the military.

“The military did not proscribe IPOB; due process was followed before the proscription. What the military did was to diagnose the security elements and warn of consequences. The military also knows the law,” he said.

Enenche also said that the military deployment in states all over the country was to complement the efforts of other security agencies.

“It is the military that can tell you the signs and symptoms of a security element. Other countries passed through what we are passing through before they got to their present developed state,” he added.

Meanwhile, a magistrates’ court sitting in Abia state on Wednesday, September 27, remanded 14 members of IPOB in Aba Federal Prison.

They are: Anthony Nnamani (20 years), Chima Chukwumere (22 years), Kingsley Sunday (21 years), Michael Onyedikachi(26 years), Eze Okereke (25 years), Christian Sylvester (45 years), Etim Effiong Ade (22 years) and Emmanuel Onwukwe( 29 years).

Others are Ndubuisi Ukoha (29 years), Ogbonna Nwaji (24 years), Salvation Stephen (22 years), Chizoba Nwosu (21 years), Ejike Elom (21 years) and Kelechi Anusie (26 years).

They were arraigned on eight count of conspiracy, murder, arson, unlawful association, unlawful assembly, stealing with other two charges dealing on burning of the Ariaria Divisional Police Headquarters building and the cars at the premises.

How to prepare your car for sale

Selling a car is a relatively easy task – buying a used car is getting more and more popular these days.

On the other hand, if you want to gain the most from your old vehicle, you will have to make some preparations before trying to put it on the market. If you’re ready to put some effort and spend some time to make your car worth its maximum, here are a few tips that will help you with that.

Sell your car profitably on Jiji.ng!

Use the Jiji app to find a car of your dreams and buy it for the best price!

1. Prepare it from the outside

The appearance of your car is one of the main selling points. If you want it to attract attention, it will need to look flawless. Here is what you need to do to make sure it sells well:

1.1. Take care of your interior

Pay special attention to the seats, dashboard and a steering wheel, as they should appear in your car’s ad.

Vacuum every surface you can reach, if your seats’ upholstery is made out of cloth – use shampoo to clean it.

Do the same with the mats and carpets. Make sure to get rid of all your stuff.

How to prepare your car for sale

1.2. Clean and renew the exterior

There are means you can use to make your car look like new, and you should use every last one of them.

Thoroughly wash your vehicle, polish and use car wax to make it shinier.

Pay attention to the windshield, as it should be the biggest smooth surface on your car and any defects will be easily noticeable. Other places you should pay regards to are the ones that are easily soiled and often overlooked – like door jambs and bumpers.

Another thing many buyers are checking before buying a car are the tires. A worn-off rubber is a first signal that the owner hasn’t been really careful about the car. Buying new tires may be a bit costly, but it’s an investment that will surely pay off.

2. Get it ready from under the hood

Any buyer will probably want to test-drive your car, and if you want to have a smooth deal you should get rid of all the major and minor problems your car’s insides might have, including those weird sounds. Here are the main things you should do:

How to prepare your car for sale

2.1. Change the fluids

Oil and other fluids in your car can be checked really easily, which is why every smart buyer will probably do it. Changing them doesn’t require a lot of time or money, so you definitely should do it.

2.2. Check the small details

Loose bolts and nuts are the main reason of the rattling sounds during the drive, so you should definitely check every small part.

Change anything that moves if it shouldn’t, and oil anything that doesn’t move if it should. Also, pay attention to hoses and belts, change them, if they are too worn – it can lead to a number of dangerous situations.

How to prepare your car for sale

3. Prepare all the documents and information

Your car’s looks are the first thing that will attract customers, but your preparedness is what might seal the deal for them. Make sure you have such documents as:

  • Vehicle license;
  • Certificate of roadworthiness;
  • Insurance;
  • Proof of ownership.

You should also be ready to talk about the history of your car – every road accident and a story about every dent you might have. Any buyer will appreciate your upfront attitude and honesty.

British Government queries FG over Nnamdi Kanu's whereabouts

– The status and whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu is of interest to the British Government

– The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader has not been seen in public after a Nigerian Military raid in his country home in Abia state

– Kanu is a Nigerian and British citizen

A report by Punch indicates that the United Kingdom has asked the Nigerian government to clarify the status and whereabouts of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

According to the report, the British government said it had asked the Nigerian government if the British/Nigerian national was alive or dead.

This was made known by the press officer, United Kingdom High Commission in Nigeria, Joe Abuku.

British Government seeks Nnamdi Kanu's whereabouts from FG

READ ALSO: 14 IPOB members remanded in Aba Federal Prison

Abuku stated that the inquiry followed reports that Kanu had been missing since Thursday, September 14, after a Nigerian Military raid in his country home in Abia state .

“We are seeking urgent clarification from the Nigerian authorities about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, a British-Nigerian man, who has been reported missing since September 14,” Abuku told Punch via email on Thursday, September 28.

When asked if the UK would strip Kanu of his British citizenship on account of the declaration by the Nigerian government that he was leading a terrorist organisation, Abuku said they don’t comment on individual cases.

His words: “One of the conditions that can make the United Kingdom strip its citizen of nationality is if the person engages in a terrorist activity at home or abroad. And Kanu has dual citizenship and therefore a citizen of Nigeria and the UK.”

On whether the UK supported the Nigerian government’s proscription of IPOB, Abuku responded saying the group was not a proscribed organisation under the British law.

“The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a proscribed organisation in the UK,” he stressed.

He also declined comment on whether the IPOB might be designated as a terrorist group or proscribed by the British authorities.

“We do not routinely comment on whether an organisation is or is not under consideration for proscription. A decision to proscribe an organisation must be based on a belief that it is concerned in terrorism as defined in the Terrorism Act 2000, and it must be proportionate,” he added.

It could not be immediately ascertained if the Nigerian government had responded to the inquiries or not.

The United States had earlier said it did not consider IPOB a terrorist group and urged Nigerians to de-escalate tension and embrace peaceful resolution of grievances.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law,” spokesperson for the American Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks said in a statement.

Nigeria is a mix of different and distinctive regions, including mountains, deserts, swamps, plains, and even steamy jungles. With one of the largest river systems in the world, Nigeria has all the natural resources needed to thrive. Most of the regions in Nigeria are covered with savannas. But there are also a lot of tropical grasslands spread out, separated in some places by trees. Although Nigeria has a variety of distinctive regions, it seems that the north of the country is connected to one of the biggest world deserts.

The Sahara desert is closer

Which desert's edge is found at Nigeria's northernmost borderland? The Sahara desert is getting closer.

While there are no actual desert areas in Nigeria, the northern part of Nigeria borders with a region known as the Sahel. Sahel in Arabic means “shore.” The 5,000-kilometer stretch of Savannah, which forms the edge of the Sahara Desert next to Nigeria has been a problem for Nigerian government and citizens. The Sahel stretch keeps on spreading and in future it may even occupy all of Nigeria, Mauritania and Senegal territories.

Which desert's edge is found at Nigeria's northernmost borderland? The Sahel region's problem is an urgent issue in Nigeria.

In the past, Sahara desert used to be the place with wide variety of plant and animal life. But then due to environmental changes and landscape transformation, it became the biggest desert on Earth. Those who live in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe and Adamawa states have already become the victims of Sahara desert widening process.

The sand and dryness do not let people plant crops and earn a living. Volunteers and international organizations have visited the Sahel region to help fight the drought. These days, the fact that the northern region of Nigeria may become an extension of the Sahara’s territory bothers a lot of people.

Short history of Independence in Nigeria

European influence in our country is one we had had to deal with since the Portuguese and Spaniards appeared on our land in the 16th century. The British, from whom we separated in 1960, seized power in Nigeria in the 19th century. Germany also fought for this power but the British were victorious.

Even though some European customs still existed in the country, the call for Nigerian independence, which took place in the middle of the 20th century, strengthened Nigerians as a separate nation, not a foreign colony. Nigeria received the status of a ‘federal republic’ and adopted its constitution in 1963. At that time, Nnamdi Azikiwe became the first president.

Our country has gone through difficulties and continues to move towards the creation of a prosperous life for all Nigerians. Thus, the Nigeria Independence Day is celebrated annually.
