Mouktar Muhammed, first governor of Kaduna state dies in London hospital

Mouktar Muhammed, one time governor of Kaduna state and retired senior military officer is dead.

The retired air vice marshal, died Sunday, October 1.

His death was announced through a Facebook post by his younger brother, Faruk Dalhatu.

According to Premium Times, Muhammed died in a London hospital.

Ex-Kaduna governor Mouktar Muhammed dies in London hospital

The former governor was said to have died of cancer.

He was the first governor of Kaduna state after its creation in 1977 by the military administration of Olusegun Obasanjo.

Mouktar Muhammed earlier served as the minister of Housing, Urban Development and Environment from 1976 to 1977, following the coup that brought Murtala Mohammed to power.

He was the head of one of the military tribunals that tried and sentenced second republic politicians suspected of corruption under the military administration of Muhammadu Buhari, from 1983 to 1985 to decades in prison.

He spearheaded activities of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) from 2002.

Last year, he was named as chairman of the governing council of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He held the title of Wazirin Dutse until his death and was deputy chairman of the Board of Trustees of Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF.

He was also chairman of Kano-based Freedom Radio.

Meanwhile, ZENITHBLOG.com had reported that after four days in the hands of kidnappers, Emmanuel Adeniyi, an assistant commissioner of police, has been rescued by security operatives.

Adeniyi, the officer-in-charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID) in Zamfara, was kidnapped along Birnin-Gwari-Funtua Road, Kaduna state and security operatives promised to ensure his freedom.

The 2017 Independence Day Interdenominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.

The service which held on Sunday, October 1, was also used to round off the 400 hours of non-stop praise which began on September 14, organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria.

At the service were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife Dolapo, speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; former head of state General Yakubu Gowon; former president, Olusegun Obasanjo; former interim president, Ernest Shonekan.

Earlier, ZENITHBLOG.com reported that Osinbajo declared that the Nigeria’s future would be better than its past during his remarks at the service.

He said : “I declare concerning this nation that this nation will be fruitful, that this nation will prosper, that this nation will attain all of the plans and purposes of God.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari celebrated the 57th Independence anniversary in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

The visit which came hours after he addressed the nation, is the first time the president would visit troops fighting insurgency in the state.

IPOB supporter who died while protecting their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, laid to rest (photos)

A member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Henry Ogar Ogoyi, who allegedly died while protecting their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been buried.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that Mr Ogoyi was laid to rest on Monday, October 1.

Multiple online reports claim that Mr Ogoyi who hails from Iyala Ogoja, died during the clash between the military and some members of the secessionist group in Umuahia, Abia state on September 14.

Mr Ogoyi was the only son of his parents. He is survived by a pregnant wife and their one-year-old child. May his soul rest in peace.

Former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu spotted eating roadside Akara with friends

Former governor of Abia state and billionaire businessman, Dr. Orji Kalu was spotted on Independence Day treating himself to a roadside bean cake a.k.a Akara.

This is coming after the governor claimed that IPOB leader, Nnamdi KanuI was not taken away or killed by the Nigerian military during the raid in his father’s residence in Afara Ibeku, Umuahia in Abia state.

He said one of Kanu’s relative had earlier told him that the IPOB leader left Nigeria to London through Malaysia following the tension between the group members and the military.

Catalonia votes in favor of independence from Spain amid a violent crackdown by national police

– Catalan leader declared that Catalonia has won the right to freedom

– The announcement came less than 24 hours after police attacked those voting for referendum

– A Spain’s constitutional court had banned the vote for referendums by Catalans

Less than twenty four hours after police officers disrupted the voting process for Independence of Catalonia, the Catalan leader has declared victory for his people.

Catan leader, Carles Puigdemont, said the region has won the right to freedom and to become a republic after several hundreds voters were attacked by the police.

Recall that ZENITHBLOG.com reported that no less than 400 voters sustained different degrees of injury when the Spanish police descended on voters on October 1.

A constitutional court in Spain had banned the vote and there was a crackdown on voting centres with the police hijacking the voting urns in centres attacked.

Puigdemont, while addressing his people, after the aborted voting, said: “With this day of hope and suffering, the citizens of Catalonia have won the right to an independent state in the form of a republic.

“My government in the next few days will send the results of today’s vote to the Catalan parliament, where the sovereignty of our people lies, so that it can act in accordance with the law of the referendum.”

Catalan officials later said 90% of those who voted backed independence in Sunday’s vote. The turnout was 42.3%.

BBC reported that not less than 2.2 million people have voted out of 5.3 million registered voters, according to claims by Catalan authorities.

Buhari left the Aso Rock Presidential Villa for Maiduguri where he met with the troops and gave them reassuring words.

The unity of Nigeria is non-negotiable, Group tells Nigerian youths

– Nigerians marked its 57th anniversary today, Sunday, October 1 as a country

– The independence day celebration across the country has been witnessed messages from prominent individuals and groups

– One of the statements that stood out is that of Advocates for Collective Transformation and Youth Empowerment Initiative (ACT)

A youth group, Advocates for Collective Transformation and Youth Empowerment Initiative (ACT), has called on Nigerian youths not to lose hope in Nigeria , insisting that the country is on its path to greatness.

ACT’s national president, Dr. Oluwatayo Fashogbon in a statement sent to ZENITHBLOG.com on Sunday, October 1, said Nigerian youths must be allowed and available to contribute to the growth of the country.

The group also called on Nigerian youths to support the President Buhari-led government in providing solutions to the nation’s problems.

“We must show sincerity of purpose with the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in the new Nigeria project.

“Let’s take a cue from the presidential speech of President Muhammadu Buhari and collectively rededicate ourselves to making Nigeria great for ourselves and generations unborn, though disagreements will occur along the way, we must remain focused on the larger picture by adopting peaceful, civilized and democratic channels for the resolutions of our disputes and disagreements,” the statement said.

Largest Nigerian flag hoisted in Abuja to commemorate Nigeria's 57th independence

– Nigerians from all walks of life today, Sunday, October 1, celebrated the country’s independence in different ways

– A group of bike riders in Abuja known as The Rider’s Embassy marked theirs in a unique way

– They rode around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and hoisted the largest Nigerian flag in the city

A group of bike riders in Abuja known as The Rider’s Embassy today, Sunday, October 1, hoisted the largest Nigerian flag in the FCT.

The event which was in celebration of Nigeria’s 57th Independence anniversary, was tagged Ride For One Nigeria.

Addressing journalists at the event, leader of the group, Abubakar Abdullahi, stated that the event was organised to make a statement in the FCT, for the unity of Nigeria in solidarity with the millions of Nigerians who hope to see a better Nigeria.

His words: “We ride today with the conviction that despite our seeming differences and problems, we are better as a united and not divide nation.

Abdullahi expressed optimism that Nigerians will see the prospects of the nation when its people are united.

He also noted that many of the grieviances are legitimate, but stressed that the demands or solutions to these agitations does not include the division of Nigeria.

“To the contrary, we believe that a more united Nigeria is what we need to address these problems,” he added.

ZENITHBLOG.com observed that the group embarked on a ride round the city center and ended up at Tobix Recreational Park where the flag was hoisted amidst cheers and accolades from those present at the colourful event.

Meanwhile, young American-based Nigerian, who declared his interest to contest for 2019 presidential election three months ago, Chris Emejuru, has stated that restructuring Nigeria is the best way to address the country’s problems.

Emejuru made the call in a statement he personally signed and sent to ZENITHBLOG.com on the 57th anniversary of Nigeria.

He also dismissed calls for secession from some quarters, stressing that they are not realistic.

400 injured as police attack voters in Catalonia independence referendum (photos, video)

– However, regional authorities insisted that the referendum will hold despite ballot papers being seized

Emergency services in Catalonia have reported scores of injuries suffered by Catalans in clashes with the Spanish police determined to stop voting in a referendum for independence today.

The injuries to people occurred as riot police stormed voting stations to stop the referendum on independence from Spain.

Most of those people sustained slight injuries and three suffered more serious injuries, the Catalan services said on Twitter.

Police broke down doors to force entry into voting stations as defiant Catalans shouted ‘Out with the occupying forces!” and sang the anthem of the wealthy northeastern region. In one incident in Barcelona, police fired rubber bullets.

The referendum, declared illegal by Spain’s central government, has thrown the country into its worst constitutional crisis in decades and deepened a centuries-old rift between Madrid and Barcelona.

Despite the police action, hundreds-strong queues of people formed in cities and villages throughout the region to cast their votes. At one Barcelona polling station, elderly people and those with children entered first.

“I‘m so pleased because despite all the hurdles they’ve put up, I’ve managed to vote,” said Teresa, a 72-year-old pensioner in Barcelona who had stood in line for six hours.

The ballot will have no legal status as it has been blocked by Spain’s Constitutional Court and Madrid for being at odds with the 1978 constitution.

A minority of around 40 percent of Catalans support independence, polls show, although a majority want to hold a referendum on the issue. The region of 7.5 million people has an economy larger than that of Portugal.

However much voting takes place, a “yes” result is likely, given that most of those who support independence are expected to cast ballots while most of those against it are not.

ZENITHBLOG.com had reported that the government of Spain deployed police reinforcements to Catalonia to help maintain order if the proposed independence referendum goes ahead.

According to the press, the extra officers are to back the Catalan regional police, who are under orders to prevent the staging of the referendum.

Catalan authorities despite the arrest of a dozen regional government officials and 10 million ballot papers being seized, the vote will take place.
