The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) on Friday, September 29 said an estimated three million children need emergency education support occasioned by the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast.
UNICEF’s deputy director, Justin Forsyth, told journalists in Maiduguri that urgent interventions were necessary to address the situation.
Forsyth said that over 57 per cent of basic and post basic schools in Borno were closed down due to the crisis caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.

He disclosed that 1,400 schools were destroyed; 2,295 teachers killed, while 19 000 teachers were displaced by the insurgency in the region.

His words: “An estimated three million children are in need of emergency education support at the start of the new academic year.
“Children in the northeast are living through so much horror; in addition to malnutrition, violence and outbreak of cholera.
“The attacks on schools is in danger of creating a lost generation of children threatening their future and countries.
“To date, nearly one million children have been displaced by the crisis and 450,000 of them under the age of five are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year.”
Forsyth explained that UNICEF in collaboration with government and partners were working to rehabilitate schools, classrooms and training of teachers to build a stronger education system.
The UNICEF official disclosed that the organisation in concert with development partners had so far enrolled 750,000 children in schools, established 350 temporary learning centres and distributed 94,000 packs of instructional materials to the displaced children in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
“However, some children living in displaced camps in Borno state are actually benefitting from education for the first time in their lives.
“At Muna Garage Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri, an estimated 90 per cent of children were enrolled in schools for the first time,” he said.
Forsyth noted that the prompt interventions by the government and humanitarian organisation had assisted to mitigate malnutrition and famine in the war ravaged region.
The director stressed the need for a more comprehensive approach and greater commitments to address education, malnutrition and health needs of children affected by the insurgency in the region.
Forsyth also commended the Federal and Borno governments over their commitment to reinvigorate the education sector and address the humanitarian crisis in the state.
He said that he would report to the organisation’s headquarters on the situation to enable it scale up activities in the region, adding that UNICEF is committed to the protection of children fundamental rights.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Forsyth is in Borno for a three-day working visit, to appraise the UNICEF humanitarian interventions in the region.
The UNICEF chief visited IDP camps in Banki and Maiduguri where he interacted with families and children displaced by the insurgency.
UNICEF operates in 190 countries to promote the rights and wellbeing of children, safeguard and guaranty their rights to education and health as well as protection from violence and abuse. (NAN)
Meanwhile, the immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has advised the federal government to pay critical attention to the high rate of maternal mortality in the country.
Mimiko gave the advise while speaking to journalists, on Friday, September 22, at the Chatham House in London. The former governor delivered a paper on “Improving Access to Health Services for All” using his administration’s achievement in maternal and child health as a case study.

The leadership of the Igbo community in Northern Nigeria has shunned renewed calls urging them to return home ahead of Sunday, October 1, The Nation reports.
An association of lawyers in Anambra state, on Thursday, September 28, advised Igbos to vacate the north, whether the threat would be carried out or not.
Reacting to the call, the vice president of Igbo Delegate Assembly in 19 northern states, Chris Nnoli, said the call by the so called lawyers was condemnable.

He further described the call as nothing but mischief, while expressing his disappointment and dismay that professionals like lawyers could make such call.
“We are not in support of such call. And if lawyers actually made such call, because I also read the story in a national daily, then it is very unfortunate and we are not going heed it,” he said.
Nnoli, who is also the president-general of Igbo Community Welfare Association (ICWA) in Kaduna state, added that October 1 remains Nigeria’s national day and they will all celebrate together as Nigerians.
He said no Igbo man living in the north will heed such call because every Nigerian under the constitution of the country has the right to live anywhere they feel like within the country.
This was as Yerima Shettima, one of the leaders of the Coalition of Northern Youths, assured Igbos in the north that no harm will come their way on October 1 or after.
Shettima described the lawyers as mischief makers and enemies of Nigeria.
His words: “We are a people of honour and respect. We honour our words. So, the Igbo in the north can go about their normal business and should not listen to mischief makers.
“We have sensitised our members to ensure the safety of every Nigerian, especially the Igbo, and we can assure you that nothing will happen to the Igbo by October 1 and even beyond.”
Meanwhile, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has condemned plans by the Kaduna state government to arrest leaders of the Arewa youth coalition.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has condemned plans by the Kaduna state government to arrest members of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG).
Spokesman of the NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi, stated that the Kaduna state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has no moral stand to order for the arrest of the Arewa youths, who he said woke Nigeria from its slumber.
The Kaduna state government had on Thursday, September 28 announced that it obtained a bench warrant from the court to arrest members of the CNG who gave October 1 as deadline for Igbos living in the North to quit or be forced out of the region.

The CNG has since withdrawn following the intervention of the Borno state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima.

Professor Abdullahi told Leadership: “The government owns the power to arrest whoever they want to arrest, but I hope that they would arrest the youths and put them on trial in the court of law that belongs to Nigerians and not the ones they set up.
“We know that the government of El-Rufai doesn’t even obey the law or court orders. I supported the youths’ declaration. They did a good job and by waking up Nigeria from its sleep.”
But the Kaduna state police command maintained last night that the warrant of arrest on the Arewa youths from the court of law will be fully implemented.
The state commissioner of police, Agyole Abeh, said, “Any warrant of arrest from a court will be carried.”
Details of the warrant of arrest on the Arewa Youths showed that the offences committed by the accused persons include:
– Inciting disturbance punishable under section 78 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state 2017
– Disturbing public peace punishable under section 77 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state 2017
– Injurious falsehood punishable under section 373 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state 2017
– Unlawful assembly punishable under section 66, and
– Criminal conspiracy punishable under section 59 of the penal code laws of Kaduna State 2017
Meanwhile, ahead of the October 1 quit notice deadline previously issued by the Arewa youths, Igbo indigenes resident in northern Nigeria have been advised to return back to the southeast, by some concerned lawyers in Onitsha, Anambra state.
The lawyers – Samuel Chukwukelu, Ben Okoko and Maurice Efobi – made their comments while speaking to newsmen in Onitsha on Thursday, September 28.
The lawyers advised Igbos to vacate the north, whether the threat would be carried out or not and despite the fact that the quit notice had been revoked by the Arewa youths.

Editor’s note:Nkechi Odoma, an Abuja based analyst in this piece, analysed the operation carried out by some soldiers of the Nigerian military in the south east region recently.
Odoma commending the military said the solider who were deployed for the “Operation Python II” were patriotic in carrying out their duty.
Before now, screaming the word soldiers anywhere in Nigeria would attract instant public panic and hysteria. Nigerian military and especially soldiers had a disgusting public aura. They had an unenviable tag as unfriendly professionals, brutes, barbaric and torturers of civilians.
It was bloody for a “bloody civilian” to inspire military instincts in a soldier, anytime, anywhere. Any civilian victim of a soldier’s intemperate anger was sure of his path to his instant extinction by the demons of hell on earth, before advancing the gates of hell fire.
But such dispositions and beastliness in soldiers have ebbed out surprisingly under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The appointment of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai was informed by several reasons, which also included the inclination of the Presidency to reform, reposition and re-professionalize the Nigerian Army.
Undeniably, Gen. Buratai has handled this assignment expertly. These days, the portrait of an average Nigerian soldier anywhere oozes with discipline, professionalism, friendliness and uniquely sociable.

Nigerians can concede defiantly that in the last two years, Nigerian soldiers have been engaged in numerous special assignments in almost every part of the country. Soldiers have repressed the tempo of militancy in the Niger Delta and determinedly at the verge of the final lethal blow to Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria’s north east.
Neither the armed bandits and cattle rustlers in the Northwest have had the grace to overwhelm civil security and civilians anymore nor their marauding armed comrades terrorizing Nigerians in the Middle Belt, as evidenced in the herders/farmers clashes.

Insurrectional groups, which have assumed the character of terrorists have kept grumbling and groaning. Soldiers are reinventing their absurd radicalism and repugnant fanatical ideologies to make them better human beings to co-inhabit with other Nigerians peacefully.
They preach repentance or resort to combat where necessary for public interest. What is more fascinating is the friendly mien, the civic decorum and the infinite zeal of soldiers on special assignments to passionately protect the human rights of Nigerians.
The ongoing Operation Python Dance II in Southeast Nigeria, translated into the Igbo vernacular as “Egwu Eke II” is one such rewarding operations to fortify internal security undertaken by the Nigerian Army.
In 2016, the clarion call on soldiers necessitated the launch of Operation Python Dance I to cleanse the region of armed criminals who had unrestrictedly seized the peace and security of the south east.
The success of the operation resounded in more ways than imagined, just like what the Army replicated elsewhere in Nigeria. Nigerians now perceive soldiers more as friends and protectors, than trumpeters of war or tormentors of the civilian population. No intention to malign, but today’s Nigerian soldiers are more friendly than the Police.

Operation Egwu Eke II has definitely attracted some few negative remarks. It is not unexpected, as only a narrow-minded person would think of absolute acceptance of actions of government. In fact, divergent views enliven and strengthen democratic engagement.
But what cannot be divorced from the “pythonic dance” anchored by the Nigerian Army, in compliance with a Presidential directive is its desirability and timeliness in salvaging a region which had almost given up hope on a peaceful and secured environment. The name of the operation itself is expressive of the denotations.

In Igbo land, the python snake has a likeable myth to Igbo people. Erudite scholar and literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe explained the value of the python snake to the Igbo in the novel, “Things Fall Apart, ” as a reptile perceived as an ancestral guardian of the people, to the extent no Igbo native dares to kill a python snake in his compound. And if such act is committed in inadvertently, he performs some appeasement rituals and accords the python burial rites similar to a human being.
So, the Army’s choice of the operation as “Python Dance” itself embodies and explicitly explains the protective mission of soldiers in the Southeast region. It is monotonous to reiterate again that the Southeast has been plunged in weird and violent crimes.

The south east like any other region in Nigeria is not immune or insulated from violent crimes. But with the ascendancy of Nnamdi Kanu’s Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), violent crimes engulfed the Southeast and reached a crescendo that submerged the strongest pillars of civil security.
Before the intervention of Operation Python Dance II, an outsider who visits the Southeast and observes the trend could easily run a hasty conclusion that the undignified life of crime delights and pacifies Nigerians.
The falsity of the conclusion is measured by the screams and the near perennial psychological trauma victims of violent crimes precipitated by IPOB keep recounting. It is an indication of strong repulsion to what Kanu and his gangs in IPOB had imposed on the people through crude force.
No responsible and responsive leadership abuses the sacred provision of the Constitution which confers on any leader the onerous responsibility of protecting lives and property of the citizenry. President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) could afford to dilly-dally on some national issues; but dusts off his comic content when threats to public peace, law and order are involved.

The spate of terrorism and other violent acts which besieged Nigeria, when PMB assumed office in 2015 were not only fantastically awful , but potently choked and suffocated Nigeria. It was dragging the nation into the regrettable path of total ruination, had it been allowed to persist. But he acted swiftly, deploying civil security and burdening soldiers where necessary to secure Nigerians.
Operation Python Dance II stems from this mindset and the lamentations of weary citizens over torture by super armed gangs, kidnappers/abductors, assassins and , armed robbers with undisguised affinity with IPOB.
The one -month span of the Operation Python Dance II is slightly two weeks old, but respite has returned to a once troubled Southeast region. The initial suspicions and cynicism, which wrongly ascribed the status of brutes to Nigerian soldiers have eclipsed into eulogies of soldiers as peace descends on the south east.
The notion that soldiers were deployed to crush the Igbo nation into submission to federal forces has vanished into the pleasurable savouring of the peace and serene environment violently deprived them by armed gangs. Disciplined and professional soldiers are diligently prosecuting this assignment flawlessly.
It explains why Nigerians are not stampeded with tales of torture, killings and inhuman treatment of the civilian population even when excited criminals overstretch their bond of radicalism and hostility by unjustifiably attacking soldiers in the line of duty. In extreme situations, soldiers arrest and treat them like fellow compatriots, by serving them food and refreshments.
The ordinary south easterner, much like the elite, with huge investments in the region, which were intermittently threatened by looting by IPOB’s armed criminal gangs, are collectively singing a new song of liberation.
Soldiers have mingled and blended with the civil populace, who are determined now, more than ever, to assist them with privileged information to fish out hardened criminals from the hideouts.

And to checkmate any dereliction of duty, the COAS constantly excuses himself from the theatre of war in Maiduguri to supervise the operations of Operation Python Dance II to ensure strict adherence to the best rules of engagement and the religious observance of the human rights of members of host communities.
This cordial interface has railroaded into free medical services to host communities as these soldiers are famed in the north or south.
Just recently, General Buratai personally supervised the free medical services, conducted by troops of Operation Python Dance II. It is their distinctive courtship of host communities anywhere they are deployed on special assignments’.
The patriotism of soldiers drafted for the operation is legendary, as reflected in the physical and psychological content and fitness, excited by prompt payment of salaries and legitimate allowances.
An African adage says, after darkness, comes sunshine. Operation Python Dance II has berthed in the south east and it is performing a marvelous job to the admiration of law abiding and peace-loving Nigerians in the region.

Those scary or gripped by phobia are the armed criminals, who make mince meal of the police but dread soldiers. They are the elements on the run, as the previously obliterated commercial and night life in the region are nicely reviving.
Those pained by the presence of soldiers and instigating a barrage of campaigns against them are the same criminals who have not been allowed to dupe, loot , assassinate and violently rob the people in preparation for yuletide that are loudly complaining about militarization or arguing for withdrawal of troops.
The new feeling of security traversing the Southeast is best surmised by the Abia state Deputy Governor, Chief Ude Oko Chukwu who has not only poured unreserved appreciation to the Nigeria Army “for this wonderful exercise, ” but pontificated that “Abia is better for it security wise”. It’s the new status of the Southeast engineered by soldiers.
It is the guilty who dreads every shadow; much as it is only doubtful and criminal minds that read from different interpretations and perceptions about the presence of soldiers anywhere. But every peaceful and responsible Nigerian echoes loudly today that “soldier Na your friend!”

The Defence Headquarters has said that it has no business declaring IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, wanted.
This was made known by the director, defence information, Major General John Enenche at a press briefing with journalists on Friday, September 29.
Enenche also informed journalists present at the briefing that Kanu was not in military custody and so they couldn’t be held accountable for him.

His words: “Kanu is not in the custody of the military. It is not the responsibility of the DHQ to declare him wanted.
“If the court says that if he does not show up for hearing, it will hold the military responsible, (then) let us wait till that time.
“The military never raided Kanu’s house. I watched the whole operation live on that day. Even I don’t have any right to stop you while passing on a public route.
“I saw that the Biafran Security Service and the Biafran National Guards mounted roadblocks, and the soldiers came out peacefully and said, ‘Boys, let us pass’. But the Biafrans attempted to collect their guns. Nobody went to Kanu’s house or raided him or took him away.”
He also clarified that the military was not involved in the proscription of IPOB.
“The statement of the DHQ on IPOB’s activities is not opposed to what the army chief came out to say. Did we say IPOB was proscribed? No. But some people had a mindset and were in a hurry to attack the military.
“The military did not proscribe IPOB; due process was followed before the proscription. What the military did was to diagnose the security elements and warn of consequences. The military also knows the law,” he said.
Enenche also said that the military deployment in states all over the country was to complement the efforts of other security agencies.
“It is the military that can tell you the signs and symptoms of a security element. Other countries passed through what we are passing through before they got to their present developed state,” he added.
Meanwhile, a magistrates’ court sitting in Abia state on Wednesday, September 27, remanded 14 members of IPOB in Aba Federal Prison.
They are: Anthony Nnamani (20 years), Chima Chukwumere (22 years), Kingsley Sunday (21 years), Michael Onyedikachi(26 years), Eze Okereke (25 years), Christian Sylvester (45 years), Etim Effiong Ade (22 years) and Emmanuel Onwukwe( 29 years).
Others are Ndubuisi Ukoha (29 years), Ogbonna Nwaji (24 years), Salvation Stephen (22 years), Chizoba Nwosu (21 years), Ejike Elom (21 years) and Kelechi Anusie (26 years).
They were arraigned on eight count of conspiracy, murder, arson, unlawful association, unlawful assembly, stealing with other two charges dealing on burning of the Ariaria Divisional Police Headquarters building and the cars at the premises.

A report by Punch indicates that the United Kingdom has asked the Nigerian government to clarify the status and whereabouts of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to the report, the British government said it had asked the Nigerian government if the British/Nigerian national was alive or dead.
This was made known by the press officer, United Kingdom High Commission in Nigeria, Joe Abuku.

Abuku stated that the inquiry followed reports that Kanu had been missing since Thursday, September 14, after a Nigerian Military raid in his country home in Abia state .
“We are seeking urgent clarification from the Nigerian authorities about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, a British-Nigerian man, who has been reported missing since September 14,” Abuku told Punch via email on Thursday, September 28.
When asked if the UK would strip Kanu of his British citizenship on account of the declaration by the Nigerian government that he was leading a terrorist organisation, Abuku said they don’t comment on individual cases.
His words: “One of the conditions that can make the United Kingdom strip its citizen of nationality is if the person engages in a terrorist activity at home or abroad. And Kanu has dual citizenship and therefore a citizen of Nigeria and the UK.”
On whether the UK supported the Nigerian government’s proscription of IPOB, Abuku responded saying the group was not a proscribed organisation under the British law.
“The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a proscribed organisation in the UK,” he stressed.
He also declined comment on whether the IPOB might be designated as a terrorist group or proscribed by the British authorities.
“We do not routinely comment on whether an organisation is or is not under consideration for proscription. A decision to proscribe an organisation must be based on a belief that it is concerned in terrorism as defined in the Terrorism Act 2000, and it must be proportionate,” he added.
It could not be immediately ascertained if the Nigerian government had responded to the inquiries or not.
The United States had earlier said it did not consider IPOB a terrorist group and urged Nigerians to de-escalate tension and embrace peaceful resolution of grievances.
“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law,” spokesperson for the American Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks said in a statement.

You can try to join the club, but it will not be easy. Also, it does not automatically mean you will get a scholarship. Rotary Club only accepts candidates who wish to dedicate their lives to the club goals and mission. If you are only interested in pursuing personal goals in Rotary Club, like getting a business partnership, getting loans, etc – you will not have the chance to become a Rotarian!

In the past, Sahara desert used to be the place with wide variety of plant and animal life. But then due to environmental changes and landscape transformation, it became the biggest desert on Earth. Those who live in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe and Adamawa states have already become the victims of Sahara desert widening process.
The sand and dryness do not let people plant crops and earn a living. Volunteers and international organizations have visited the Sahel region to help fight the drought. These days, the fact that the northern region of Nigeria may become an extension of the Sahara’s territory bothers a lot of people.
Sahara desert is not stopping its journey and has already reached the northern parts of Nigeria. Can it move any further? Only time will tell. We shall also discover if people’s efforts to put a stop to this will be fruitful.

Our country has gone through difficulties and continues to move towards the creation of a prosperous life for all Nigerians. Thus, the Nigeria Independence Day is celebrated annually.
