Senate's ultimate aim is to bring down Nigeria's democracy with indirect impeachment of Buhari – Okorie reveals

-The Senate recently rejected Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

– Okorie, while blaming the president, says there are a lot to do to ensure the crisis does not derail Nigeria’s democracy

The rift between the Nigerian Senate and the presidency is an indirect impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chekwas Okorie, has said.

Senate planning to throw Nigeria into turmoil - Okorie

Okorie thinks the Senate plans to derail democracy

Okorie further claimed that the the Senate plans to ground the country without carrying out a direct impeachment against Buhari.

ZENITHBLOG.com reports that there had been a face-off between the presidency and the Senate leading to the refusal to confirm Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the alleged disgrace of Hameed Ali, the comptroller-general of customs and the refusal to confirm the list of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Okorie noted that the Senate’s stand on Magu showed that they were seriously scared of the acting chairman of the anti-graft agency and would not give peace a chance until he is removed. He called the Senate a shame to the country.

The New Telegraph reports Okorie as saying: “This is a dangerous development that is capable of destabilising the polity and causing unrest. I say this because the Senate appears to be highhanded in this matter.

“They have made their point regarding the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu. But, as far as governance is concerned, the bulk stops on the president’s table.

“The EFCC is under the purview of the executive and if the senators have made their position on Magu’s confirmation known, they world have noted it.

“But, they shouldn’t say because the president has not implemented it, every other request from the executive will not be entertained. I am not sure that the law has given them that power. This is an indirect impeachment as far I am concerned.

“It also shows that this Senate is determined to bring this government to a halt without going through the process of impeachment.

“Knowing how restive that Nigeria’s polity is and the anger in the land as a result of hunger and general poverty, the Senate’s position may trigger an ill wind that will not blow anyone any good. Even the senators may at the end find themselves scampering for safety.”

Okorie noted that the polity is too restive for this kind of muscle flexing. He advised that the Senate to concentrate more on its legislative work and give as much protection to the president

“The senators should realise that Nigerians are watching, and not too long from now, they would return to the people for renewal of their mandates.

“I will also describe what is happening as very big shame to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a political party. Even the most maligned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was able to manage its internal crises during the 16 years that they held sway.

“They made the phrase ‘family affair’ very popular because even when they got to the precipice, they told the world that they were able to resolve their crises in a family way.

“But, I can see APC as a party that will not be able to last for more than one term as a result of its inability to manage success. They are in majority in the National Assembly and they have majority of the governors as well as in control of the executive arm of government, but it is a shame that they are causing us all these distractions.

Senate planning to throw Nigeria into turmoil - Okorie

Okorie accuses the Senate led by Bukola Saraki of planning to cause chaos

“Going forward, I will not advise the president to continue to be stubborn because his leadership quality is being put to task. Because of the looming danger, I will recommend that Magu may have to give way, so that Nigeria doesn’t collapse.

“But, whether the president yields ground or not, I am disappointed in the senator, they are not patriotic at all. We have seen to an extent that they are afraid of this young man called Magu.

“If one of them could say that Magu is terrorizing them, it then means there would never be peace between them.

“So, this were the president has to show political sagacity, and I expect his friends and the so-called cabal to rally round and assist him to weather this storm, And if sacrificing Magu is the way to go, let him do it, so that Nigeria can move forward.”

Meanwhile, some Nigerians are yearning for the youths to take over the leadership of country since the leaders have become the problem. Watch this touching video:
